Fantasy football luck vs skill

Every manager says they've been unlucky. This settles it: your record next to the one your scoring deserved, how well you set your lineups and what injuries cost you.

How luck is measured

Luck is the gap between a team's actual record and its all-play record: how it would have done playing every other team every week. A team that scores the third-most points every week but keeps drawing the top scorer has a losing record and a winning all-play record. That gap is the schedule, not the manager.

And skill

  • Lineup calls. The points each team's starters scored as a share of the best lineup it could have started, and the wins the bench cost.
  • Pickups. What each team got from waivers and free agents: the points its pickups added in its lineup over what it would otherwise have started, and the wins those points were worth.
  • Injury luck. The points each team lost to major injuries, net of the players who filled in.
